    What is CrossFit?

    So everyone is talking about CrossFit, but what is it exactly? One common definition of CrossFit is as follows: “constantly varied, functional movements done at a high intensity.” At CrossFit Tidewater, we believe CrossFit is an excellent part of a healthy lifestyle, keeping bodies strong and healthy.

    CrossFit Tidewater workouts are based on the following workout principles:
    1. Accuracy
    2. Agility
    3. Balance
    4. Cardiovascular/respiratory endurance
    5. Coordination

    9. Stamina
    10. Strength

    CrossFit Exercises

    Use bodyweight as well other equipment. Our “box”—the official name for a CrossFit gym—is fully equipped and includes the following fitness items:

    • Ab mats
    • Bumper plates
    • Climbing ropes
    • GHD machines
    • Kettlebells
    • Medicine balls
    • Olympic weights
    • Pullup bars
    • Slam balls
    • Sledge hammers
    • Tires
    • TRX bands

    Every day in CrossFit there is a different WOD (workout of the day). Each session, which lasts about an hour, includes the following elements: a warmup, the core portion of the workout, and a cool down.

    Is CrossFit for Everyone?

    Who can do CrossFit? Anyone can! In any of our classes, you will find people of all ages and fitness abilities. WODs can be easily modified to take into account a participant’s strengths and weaknesses. And there is no truth to the myth that you need to get into shape to start CrossFit. CrossFit is set up so everyone can get started, regardless of fitness level.

    Is CrossFit Safe?

    There is a lot of talk these days about the safety of CrossFit. The fact of the matter is this: CrossFit is safe because we have good coaches who work with our athletes to ensure proper form is followed. In addition, CrossFit incorporates movements the body is already designed to do—and it makes the body stronger when it comes to doing those movements. CrossFit Tidewater builds its workouts on these movements and diligent coaching ensures good form is maintained so you can avoid any injuries.

    What Is a CrossFit Workout Like?

    Forget about a boring hour on the elliptical at one of those 24-hour big box gyms. CrossFit workouts tend to be a lot shorter—but a lot more intense. And with all the talk these days of the benefits of high-intensity interval training, CrossFit enthusiasts will agree. CrossFit Tidewater workouts incorporate gymnastics, plyometrics, springs, and Olympic weightlifting. You’ll still get your butt kicked—but in a shorter amount of time and at a higher level of intensity. Don’t waste one more minute phoning in your workout on the treadmill or stair climber. Enjoy better results in a shorter amount of time. The high-intensity training you’ll find CrossFit, and movements such as the deadlift, squat, snatch, clean, overhead press, and others lower body fat and increase strength in participants who work out regularly.     What Are Some of the Specific WODs at CrossFit Tidewater?

    Here are some of the popular WODs you can expect:
    You’ll need to master the somewhat infamous double-under (jumping time every two jumprope revolutions)to complete “Annie,” because you’ll be doing 150 of them. Here’s Annie, for time:
    50 Double-unders
    50 Situps
    40 Double-unders
    40 Situps
    30 Double-unders
    30 Situps
    20 Double-unders
    20 Situps
    10 Double-unders
    10 Situps

    “Fran” is a benchmark WOD consists of the following, and is done for time:
    21 Thrusters
    21 Pullups
    15 Thrusters
    15 Pullups
    9 Thrusters
    9 Pullups

    Ultimately, your goal will be to perform 20 rounds in 20 minutes.
